Find the exam you are actually sitting for.
Search by state, exam type or provider. Every entry shows how well CARE has verified it, and links to the board or testing body it came from. CARE opens only when coverage across all 50 states is complete.

The count includes the District of Columbia. “Source located” means an official page exists and its details are still being confirmed. Nothing is listed as a licensing fact until it is read from the official source.

How the exams group
Twelve names, a handful of real families.
States name and split their licenses differently. CARE groups them into exam families so one set of national questions can serve every exam that genuinely overlaps, with a thin layer for what is specific to a state or provider.
Journeyman
The general journey-level license: code lookup, calculations and theory for working electricians.
Overlap: Largest shared core. Called General Electrician in California and a journey-level general license in Washington.
Recorded in 8 jurisdictions so far: TX, CA, WA, OR, CO, MA, VA, MI.
Master
Higher-level license with heavier load calculations and code interpretation; often required to pull permits or qualify a contractor.
Overlap: Shares the journeyman core and adds depth. Oregon's supervising electrician and Washington's master certificate play similar roles.
Recorded in 4 jurisdictions so far: TX, WA, OR, CO.
Residential
Licenses limited to one- and two-family dwellings, such as residential wireman or residential electrician.
Overlap: A subset of the journeyman core (dwelling load calculations, residential wiring methods), so questions are shared, not duplicated.
Recorded in 3 jurisdictions so far: TX, CA, CO.
Electrical contractor
Business-and-trade exams for the person who qualifies an electrical contracting company.
Overlap: Trade portion draws on the master core. Business and law portions are separate and jurisdiction-specific. The NASCLA exam is accepted by participating states.
Recorded in 3 jurisdictions so far: FL, NC, US.
Maintenance and industrial
Journey-level licenses for plant and industrial work, such as maintenance electrician or industrial journeyman.
Overlap: Journeyman core plus motors, controls and industrial equipment topics.
Recorded in 2 jurisdictions so far: TX, OR.
Low-voltage and limited energy
Voice, data, video, limited-energy and non-residential lighting technician licenses.
Overlap: Small overlap with the core (Chapter 7 and 8 style topics); mostly distinct blueprints.
Recorded in 2 jurisdictions so far: CA, OR.
Fire alarm and systems
Fire alarm, fire/life safety and fire warning and security systems technician or contractor licenses.
Overlap: Distinct blueprints; shares general wiring and fire alarm code topics with low-voltage.
Recorded in 3 jurisdictions so far: CA, MA, MI.
Sign electrician
Specialty licenses for sign installation and service.
Overlap: Journeyman core plus sign-specific topics.
Recorded in 2 jurisdictions so far: TX, MI.
Lineman
Outside power-line work licenses.
Overlap: Mostly distinct from the building-wiring core.
Recorded in 1 jurisdiction so far: TX.
Electrical inspector
Certification for code inspectors, offered nationally by the International Code Council.
Overlap: Applies the same code but tests inspection judgment; shares many topics with master content.
Recorded in 1 jurisdiction so far: US.
Administrator
Licenses for the person who administers an electrical contracting business, separate from doing the work.
Overlap: Largely business and law content; little overlap with the technical core.
Recorded in 1 jurisdiction so far: WA.
Apprentice and trainee
Training registrations that sit before journey-level licensing.
Overlap: No state licensing exam was found for these categories. Treated as a pathway guide, not an exam family.
Recorded in 1 jurisdiction so far: WA.
Planned question-bank design
One national bank. Many exams.
CARE will not write a separate bank for every state. Each question is written once, tagged by topic and code edition, and reused wherever an exam's blueprint calls for it.
Layer 1
Shared national core
Concepts and questions written once and tied to a code edition: grounding, branch circuits, conductors, motors, calculations, theory. Reused by every exam that covers them.
Layer 2
Exam blueprints
One record per exam: provider, parts, question counts, time, passing score, open-book rules, code edition and topic weights. Each blueprint points at core questions instead of copying them.
Layer 3
State and provider overlays
Only what is truly local: licensing law and rules, administrative provisions, state amendments to the code, and provider-specific format. Small by design.
This is the design CARE intends to build. No question bank exists yet, and nothing here is available to practice.
